Your schedule will be packed with classes, study sessions, and social events during your studies abroad. Setting aside time to catch up with your loved ones back home will seem like a mission impossible, but our brief guide will help you get it done.

Time Difference

If you’re not in the same time zone as your friends and family, you’ll have to put in extra effort to figure the time zones out and find the time that works for both of you.

Regular Calls

Doing regular calls with your loved ones back home can be quite a struggle, but setting a schedule will make things easier. You can try to fit the weekly or monthly family calls into your schedule and make sure to stick to it.

Share Your Schedule

Sharing your course schedule with your family is a good idea because they’ll have a better insight into your availability this way.

Different Modes

Use different modes of communication to stay in touch with your loved ones. Doing a video call would be ideal, but you’ll sometimes only have time to text or send an audio message—and that’s better than nothing.

Multitasking

You can combine other activities with your family interactions and call them when you’re commuting to college, running errands, cleaning up your dorm, or having dinner.

Studying abroad is more than just getting credits, it’s also about personal growth and cultural immersion.  However, with so much preparation and logistics to take care of, a bit of guidance on the way to your travels may be just what you need. Here are 3 questions to ask your advisor to help get things sorted.

How Will My Course Credits Transfer?

One of the first and most important aspects to clarify is how your studies abroad will fit into your overall academic plan. You want to make sure that the courses you take will contribute towards your degree requirements. Ask your advisor about the process for pre-approving course credits and any specific documentation you might need.

What Are the Financial Implications of Studying Abroad?

Studying abroad can come with its own set of financial considerations. Ask about scholarships, grants, or financial aid packages specifically available for study abroad programs. It’s also important to know how your current financial aid will apply while you’re abroad.

What Support Services Will Be Available to Me While Abroad?

Transitioning to a new academic system and adapting to a different culture can be challenging. Ask your advisor about the resources available through the study abroad program, such as academic advising, counseling services, and emergency assistance.

Studying abroad is an amazing experience. Exploring a new place while studying there is a lovely way to live abroad and you can meet a wide range of people at the college. It’s also really nice to feel some connection with the local people in the area rather than only the student population, but it can be hard to know how to make those connections. Here are some ideas to help you out.

Head to a Local Sports Game

Try to find your nearest small sports team that you’d enjoy going to watch. These local games often have small crowds and attract people from nearby areas, so showing your support will help you feel more involved in the community. If you attend regularly you can get to know the other supporters.

Research Local Volunteering

Getting involved with local projects will help you give something back to the community and feel much more connected to your surroundings and the people around you. Often volunteering opportunities are quite social events where you’ll have the chance to chat with the other volunteers.

Find the Non-Tourist Bars and Restaurants

There are often many food and drink venues in an area that are aimed at tourists, and while this isn’t necessarily a bad thing if you’re living somewhere it’s nice to find the more local, independent venues. Your support for these lesser-known establishments will be much appreciated, and you’ll feel more connected to the local people who visit these places too.

Choosing to spend part of your studying experience abroad is such an exciting thing. You get to experience life in a totally different area and with different cultures all around you, and being a student will help you make connections in the area. But it is a huge step as well and something that requires plenty of preparation. Here are some useful things to remember when you are planning your trip.

Research the Area

While it can be nice to explore somewhere once you arrive and learn about the local attractions, it’s also good when you are going to be living somewhere to have an idea in your head of what’s on offer in the area. You may well discover that there are clubs or evening classes in which you’d love to get involved, or simply a nearby green space that you’d love to explore.

Buy a Phrasebook

It’s a great idea to try to learn some of the language of your area and a phrasebook can be helpful for a concise, accessible way to learn some words and phrases.

Check and Switch Your Mobile Phone Plan

As exciting as studying abroad is, you’ll no doubt want to have some catch-up calls with your loved ones while you’re away. It’s important to double-check before you go what your current plan offers in terms of international calls and switch it if needs be.
