Getting accepted into college, especially an Ivy League college, is a huge deal for kids. And that all important application is really important to get right.

But for Princeton Day School senior, Ziad Ahmed, a passion for activism extended into his college applications and he decided to bring up the importance of his Muslim faith, in response to  question on the Stanford University application, asking “What matters to you, and why?” And to his amazement he was accepted as a student saying that, “I didn’t think I would get admitted to Stanford at all, but it’s quite refreshing to see that they view my unapologetic activism as an asset rather than a liability.” It was not only the Stanford University application department which was impressed by his response but Muslim activists from throughout the nation. In fact Ahmed’s tweet about his experience has already been liked over 5000 times.

Ahmed went on to say that it is his Muslim faith that has compelled him to turn to social activism. “To me, to be Muslim is to be a BLM ally, and I honestly can’t imagine it being any other way for me. Furthermore, it’s critical to realize that one-fourth to one-third of the Muslim community in America are black … and to separate justice for Muslims from justices for the black community is to erase the realities of the plurality of our community.”

At the tender age of 18 Ahmed has already become known, having given a TedxTalk about the stereotypes Muslim teens face. He was invited to the White House’s Iftar Dinner, was put in charge of Martin O’Malley’s youth presidential campaign, was an intern on Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign, and founded two youth organizations.

Oh and in addition to Stanford, he was also accepted to Princeton and Yale.

Yes, yes, they are both redheads but so what? Not all redheads look alike! People keep confusing Rupert Grint, Ron Weasley, one of the three main characters in the Harry Potter Film series, with Ed Sheeran, the singer.

Rupert Grint revealed The Late Late Show With James Corden that people think he’s Ed Sheeran and sometimes, he just goes with it. “It’s kinda 50/50 now. It’s like if someone stops me, it could go either way. I could be Ed or I could be me,” he added.

And apparently it’s just not people on the streets who are confusing the famous pair, British singer Leo Sayer even got the two confused.

And Rupert just went with it. It probably doesn’t help that he appears in one of Ed Sheeran’s video making everyone even more confused.

In Lego House in fact, Rupert sings in playback the song playing the part of the singer. The Harry Potter movie star should just start making music, everyone would like their songs for sure!

As millennial, older generations tend to look down on you.  Common stigmas that they associate with people in the millennial generation are that millennials are selfish, high maintenance, expect too much, lazy, and solely reliant on technology in order to communicate with people.

However, these stigmas are not necessarily accurate.  In every single generation, there are people with a variety of characteristics. Lazy and selfish people exist in people that are 21, 34, and 75.  However, older generations may just not understand how some of the stigmas that they have of millennials are actually positive.

How to Combat the Millennial Stigma

For example, millennials aren’t necessarily too expectant.  They have just grown up in a society where it is more possible than ever to reach your goals and strive for greatness. Millennials aren’t necessarily lazy, but may just prioritize social interactions, travel, and leisure time more than older generations. Millennials may not necessarily rely on technology for social interaction but may be networking on their phones to create connections that will eventually lead to real life relationships.

The stigma of being a millennial is extremely prevalent in society and many people in older generations have not to shame in constantly pointing out these character flaws that they have preconceived about millennials. However, when they tell millennials that they are the most selfish and unappreciative generation there is, maybe they are forgetting that millennials are also the most socially progressive and influential generation as well.
