Billie Eilish is just 22, but she already has nine Grammys and multiple hit songs and albums under her belt. She was never a regular teen because her rise to prominence started when she was just 14. She was homeschooled for most of her life instead of going to a regular school, but what was her homeschooling experience like?
Both Eilish and her brother Finneas O’Connell were homeschooled by their mother Maggie Baird, who had teaching experience before embarking on this journey with them. Their parents had no formal curriculum, letting them focus on their individual interests and gaining general knowledge instead. This approach certainly worked since Eilish passed her high school equivalency exam and graduated at 15.
Eilish never had any regrets about being homeschooled, and she said that the only parts of school she felt she missed out on had nothing to do with learning at all.
“I’m so glad I didn’t go to school, because if I had, I would never have the life I have now… At times I just wanted to have, like, a locker, and have a school dance that was at my own school, and get to not listen to the teacher and laugh in class,” she previously told Vogue.
