3 Excellent Coming-of-Age Movies to Watch With Friends

Being a student is a challenging time in life. There will have been so many huge changes in your life and new situations and people to adapt to. This sensitive experience can often bring about some embarrassing and uncomfortable situations as you and your peers try to navigate these new and confusing dynamics. It’s good to remember that you’re all in the same boat, and everyone will be feeling a bit unsure of themselves at times. To prove how universal these strange experiences are, there are plenty of movies that accurately sum up young adult life. Often referred to as ‘coming-of-age’ films, here are a few that are well worth a watch.

Ladybird (2017)

This movie perfectly captures that classic angst that teenagers and young adults so often feel. You can watch the endless awkward interactions that Ladybird has with family, friends, and romantic interests and feel some relief as she gradually figures out who she is and what she wants.

Moonlight (2016)

This tale is less light-hearted than Ladybird but covers some incredibly important and sensitive topics. The movie focuses on the life of Chiron, who has faced major difficulties throughout childhood and adolescence. As painful as it can be to witness these struggles, this movie was heavily praised for how well it portrays these complicated scenarios.

The Perks of Being a Wallflower (2012)

This movie has very warm, lighthearted moments but also covers some very sensitive topics. It follows the story of Charlie who is struggling to engage with his peers until he befriends some older students who show him a deeper, wilder side to life.
