Being a student is an amazing experience but comes with many challenges. As well as the joy of living an independent adult life for the first time, there are also plans with friends to factor in, let alone time for studying and possibly part-time employment. It’s understandable if this feels like an impossible mission at times, but it is feasible to fit everything in with clever planning. Here’s how to create a schedule for your week that is realistic while also being effective.

Start Each Week With a Priorities List

This is the first step to ensuring your week runs as smoothly as possible. Each week this will undoubtedly change, so it’s essential to create a list every time. You can assign each task with a priority level in order to ensure the most crucial ones are met first, and the rest can be fitted in afterward.

Time How Long Tasks Take You

A common error when people try to plan their time is not really knowing how long each thing will take them. Try to keep track of this for a few weeks so that you have a much more accurate idea and can design your schedule around this. In the future, if you come across totally new tasks, then try to estimate based on similar tasks you’ve done previously, and always leave more time than you think you’ll need.

Most colleges have an exciting and varied range of groups and societies to join. Whether it’s a popular hobby or a celebration of a culture, there are usually plenty of groups covering lots of areas of interest. If your college has a walking group then you should join, and if it doesn’t you could start one. Here are some reasons why.

A Lovely Way to Meet People and Socialize

When you join a group for a particular interest or hobby, you know you’ll have at least that in common with the other group members which can start you off with getting to know each other. Chatting to people while enjoying a stroll is a lovely way to connect with them more.

Easy Exercise

When you’re walking along in a big group you’ll hardly even notice the exercise you’re getting from the movement. This is a great way to get your daily steps in and enjoy some social and gentle exercise. You’ll also be more likely to stay motivated as you’re part of a group.

Get to Know the Area Better

The best way to get to know your local neighborhood and the area around your college site is by walking around it. Researching some routes and heading out on them with your fellow walkers will be a great way to get your bearings.

Socializing is a huge part of college life, and while nights out are great sometimes you just need a more quiet, relaxed evening. But that doesn’t mean you can’t do some fun things and try some new activities. Here are some ideas for activities that are more chilled out than heading to the club.

A Pot Luck Party

These are a great way to socialize without having to go out and spend money and you get to try a delicious variety of food. If it’s just you and your housemates you’ll have to negotiate kitchen space and timing, but it will be so worth it to share a lovely meal together.

A Zine Session

A zine is a collection of creative works put together in one format. These are often shared via social media or given out in print form. However they don’t have to be published, and it’s a really fun collective task to take part in. You can choose whatever theme or broad subject you like and simply produce a piece in whatever way feels natural to each of you. It will be lovely to see the end product of them all together.

A Sunset Walk

What better way to relax in the evening than with a stroll with your housemates? And when you can time this to catch the glorious sunset, you’ll no doubt all feel refreshed and peaceful.

Although your experience of college will never be exactly represented in a book or on film, it can be fun to engage with art forms that represent this time of life and compare notes. This is especially fun when you’re watching with your college friends, so next time someone suggests a movie night, why not try one of these classic films?

Pitch Perfect (2012)

These hilarious comedies may not accurately reflect the average college experience, but they do nicely demonstrate the importance of good friendships and the positive benefits which joining a college society can bring.

Legally Blonde (2001)

Another great comic film which investigates assumptions about appearance and intelligence, all while introducing us to some fabulous characters, memorable lines and some very pink outfits! For many this is an eminently quotable film, and Reese Witherspoon’s acting remains one of its highlights to this day.

The Social Network (2010)

This film charts the creation and rise of Facebook, and in doing so it explores the college experience of the founder Mark Zuckerburg. Again, most people’s college experience probably won’t follow the same trajectory, but it’s an interesting film full of fascinating insights into college life.

Making friends at college can be a challenge or it can be super easy. Sometimes you instantly gel with your roommates and classmates, and other times you have to work a bit harder to meet people. Either way, it’s always nice to try activities that allow you to meet new people and expand your worldview. Here are some to try.

Join a Dance Class

There will undoubtedly be loads of extracurricular activities on offer and you should take advantage of this. Joining a dance class is not only a fun way to exercise, but also great for meeting people and bonding over some bad dance moves.

Get Involved with the Students Union

Student unions are a great concept as they enable students of a university to have a say in matters that impact them. They’re also great for bringing like-minded people together and provide loads of opportunities for social meet-ups.

Head to a Local Open Mic Night

If the thought of performing on a stage terrifies you then don’t worry – loads of people go to open mics purely as an audience member. What’s lovely about them is there’s a sense of community and a casual feel to them, so heading to one alone and striking up a conversation with someone near you will be less daunting than trying that in a bar.
