Many people find their new independence at college super exciting. Living away from home gives you so much more freedom and you can decide how to live your life more easily. A great idea for something new to add to your life as a student is a bicycle. Here are some reasons why.

Great for Getting Around

College life often means dashing around from class to class and then heading into town in the evening to meet friends or head to work. Having a bike that you can jump on and whizz around on will make everything feel easier and more efficient.

Easy Exercise

When you are jumping onto the bike to get around all the time, you won’t even notice the excellent cardio exercise you’re getting from using this means of transport.

Fun Social Activity

Aside from using it to get around, you can plan some fun group bike rides with friends. When the weather is nice, you can pack some picnic food and then head to a nearby park or beach to enjoy an easy, chilled group activity.

Ecofriendly Transport

It will make you feel so much better knowing your method of transport is the super green, environmentally friendly option. Traveling with no carbon footprint is a good feeling.

If you’re somebody who wears makeup, you will understand the stress and irritation of trying to remove it at the end of the day. Waterproof eyeliners and mascaras are popular for their all-day wear and finish, but some of them are so good at staying on, we risk scrubbing and running at our eyes to remove the pigment. If you’re worried about damaging your eyes or skin in an effort to remove all of your makeup, check out these tips on some of the gentlest ways to effectively remove makeup.

Vaseline Or Petroleum Jelly

Vaseline is not just effective at softening chapped lips and dry skin. If you’re wearing eyeshadow or eyeliner, try gently dabbing a bit of Vaseline over it (taking extra care to avoid getting it in your eyes) and then rubbing until the pigment fades away. You’ll then want to use a micellar water or eye makeup remover over the Vaseline, but it can do a lot of the heavy lifting when it comes to gently shifting long-wear makeup.

Micellar Water

Micellar water works by attracting dirt particles, so it will absorb a lot of the pigment on your eyes or skin. Take care by gently dabbing at your eyes or skin with a cotton pad soaked with micellar water, and avoid too much rubbing or scrubbing at your skin. Most micellar waters claim they don’t need to be rinsed off, but it’s a good idea to double cleanse by using a foaming face wash, to ensure your skin is thoroughly clean.

Q-tips

If you’re wearing lots of eyeliner, it can help to gently run a water or micellar water soaked q-tip around your eye before you move in with other forms of makeup remover. This makes it less likely that you will brush makeup residue into your eye when you come to remove your makeup, and it also offers a quick and simple way of cleaning and refreshing your eye area without too much product.

Everyone knows that exercise is super important and should be included in your weekly schedule. However, that doesn’t mean that it’s necessarily always fun and exciting. If you find exercise to often be a chore, then consider trying some group activities to make it more fun and keep you motivated. If this sounds like a good way to exercise to you, then here are three ideas for activities to try.

5 a Side Soccer

Soccer is hugely popular across the world, but the classic version of the game requires lots of players and a huge pitch. The name of this version suggests only 5 each instead, but you can choose however many you like really. You can also simplify the rules and play in a small area. Basically, just have fun while playing a soccer-related game.

Group Bike Ride

Riding a bike with a group of friends is one of the best feelings. There’s such a sense of freedom and you can chat while cruising or just take in the views, all while getting some decent exercise.

Learn a Dance Routine

Dancing is such a great choice for exercise, as it burns so much energy and is super fun. Learning some dance moves with friends will undoubtedly lead to plenty of laughter and joy, and if you start to pick it up well then you’ll have a cool dance routine to pull out at parties.

Moving away to college is an incredibly exciting time in any student’s life, but it’s one that is often blighted by coughs, colds, and even the flu as people mix in their new accommodation and with others they meet on their courses. While socializing is definitely a good thing, it can bring an increased risk of picking up a nasty bug in your first few weeks as a freshman. There are no cures or ways to completely avoid these kinds of illnesses, but taking care of your general health and wellbeing can make any bugs you do catch less severe and long-lasting. Check out these simple tips on how to stay as well as you can in your first few weeks of college.

Consider Supplements

Even if you’ve never needed supplements before, your first few weeks at college may be a good time to consider taking them. Anything that boosts immunity, such as vitamin C and zinc, is good, and you can also try magnesium for boosting your cognitive function and focus.

Prioritize Sleep

This one is especially hard in your first few weeks at college, as you will want to say ‘yes’ to every social event so you don’t feel like you’re missing out. However, it’s important to pace yourself and get a good balance of socializing and sleep. Perhaps set some rules for yourself – if you’ve had two consecutive nights of little to no sleep, make sleep a priority on the third, or schedule naps across the week so you’re catching up on rest.

Spend Time in the Sunshine

Not only can getting sufficient vitamin D boost your wellbeing and happiness, but it also has links with our immunity. You don’t want to overdo sun exposure, but getting around ten minutes a day has proven benefits for our skin, physical health and emotional wellbeing. It’s even better if you team up your sun time with a gentle walk in the park, for some added physical benefits.

As a student, you may well feel that your time is pretty stretched. Fitting in classes, studying, socializing, and resting is a challenge. But if you have some spare time in your week and feel like filling it up, then consider taking up dog walking. There are plenty of websites and apps that connect dog owners with potential dog walkers, so here are three reasons to try it out.

Spend Time With Dogs

Whether you end up solely walking one dog each week or have multiple furry friends that you walk with, this is one of the best and easiest ways to have good contact with some canine pals. It’s a well-known fact that spending time with animals is a great boost for mental wellbeing.

Helping Out the Owners

Often people looking for people to walk their dog simply can’t find the time themselves to do it. Whether it’s due to work or family commitments, this can be a difficult situation to be in. Having people like yourself who can offer your time each week is such a huge help which will be a great feeling for you.

Great Exercise

If you love the sound of dog walking but are wondering how you’d fit it in, the great thing about it is that it’s a good form of exercise. So you can feel like you’ve achieved plenty of your weekly goals after an energetic run around the park with your furry pal.

If you’re feeling anxious and stressed by college life, the chances are lots of people have advised you to up the amount of physical activity you’re doing. This advice is often given in good faith, but in fact, for some people, certain forms of exercise can increase stress and agitation. On top of this, the risk of developing an injury from high-impact or high-cardio sports such as running can cause more problems than they solve. Check out these reasons to try pilates as an ideal stress-busting activity which many people use to help them unwind and relax after a long day.

Breath Work

Pilates teachers and practitioners will be highly aware of their breathing, and a good class teacher should encourage you to pay attention to yours. Checking in with our breathing is one of the key ways of monitoring and reducing our stress levels, so getting accustomed to doing this through pilates can help you in all areas of life.

Flexible Thinking

As your body is strengthened and conditioned by pilates, you should find your mind adjusting and opening up to a more positive way of thinking. Low-impact exercises including pilates and yoga have been scientifically proven to support people to overcome low levels of depression and anxiety, so giving pilates a go is definitely worth a try if you’re struggling with your stress at the moment.

Focus Fully

Giving yourself permission to focus on an activity such as pilates for a set amount of time can reduce your anxiety relating to your studies, and improve your overall wellbeing as you take time out from stressing about exams and coursework. Give yourself time to get used to your new habit, and before you know it, pilates will be an essential part of your week.

If you’re studying, there are a number of things you can do to support your focus and concentration and boost your brain power. As well as regularly exercising, prioritizing sleep, and staying hydrated, eating brain-healthy foods can be a great way to stay on track and meet your goals. Check out these top three brain-boosting foods, to give you some inspiration next time you need a snack.

Oily Fish

Fish high in omega 3 and 6 (think salmon, sardines, tuna and mackerel) can help boost your brain health and keep you feeling focused and sharp. Try some fresh sushi, enjoy a salmon pasta dish, or use anchovies to boost the flavor in a salad.

Leafy Greens

Vegetables such as broccoli, cabbage, spinach and green beans contain neuro-protective nutrients such as folate, potassium and lutein. Of course, green veg provides a whole array of health benefits, so eating at least one daily portion can keep you fighting fit even in the middle of exam stress. Try a roasted broccoli pasta dish, adding fresh spinach to your smoothie, or adding green beans to a stir fry.

Dark Chocolate

Do you need an energy boost? Stay away from the super sugary items and try a square or two of dark chocolate. High-quality dark chocolate contains antioxidants and other compounds which can help to improve blood flow to the brain, helping you to stay alert and focused. Additionally, dark chocolate contains a small amount of caffeine, so it can be a great way to refocus if you’re experiencing a mid-afternoon slump.

We all know that drinking plenty of water and staying hydrated throughout the day is essential in terms of our overall health and with regards to our cognitive performance. You’re never going to ace that exam or create a brilliant conclusion to your paper if your brain feels sluggish and slow due to dehydration. However, staying on top of hydration can be challenging, especially when you have one hundred other things on your to do list. These tips and tricks should help you focus on drinking enough, which will have a real benefit to your ability to focus and concentrate on your studies.

Get A Labelled Bottle

There is a reason why those water bottles with labels monitoring the time and amount of water that should have been consumed are so popular—for many people, they really work. Once you know how much water you should have consumed by 10am, it makes it easier to work towards those hydration goals and keep on track of them.

Pre-hydrate

If you know you’re going to be running around town all afternoon completing chores, or if you’re hoping to do a really intense work out at the gym, hydrate yourself in anticipation. This doesn’t mean chugging water until you feel uncomfortable, just make sure that you’re mindful of your water consumption and frequently topping up your water bottle or glass.

Use Mealtimes As A Reminder

If you’re struggling to drink water throughout the day, use meals as a way of re-hydrating. Make sure you have a large glass of water with breakfast, lunch and dinner, and this will go a long way to ensuring you’re healthily hydrated. It may also pay to be mindful of the food you’re eating—salads and fruits will contribute towards your overall hydration levels.

Do you turn up to a lecture on a weekday morning, excited and eager to hear what the professor has to say, only to find yourself nodding off after half an hour? Don’t blame yourself or the professor—lecture halls are the perfect environment for feeling drowsy in, and you can bet that a decent proportion of your fellow students are also struggling to stay awake. However, you need to hear the lecture so that you can understand the content of your course, so it’s important that you stay awake and alert throughout. Here are some top tips to help you stay engaged, none of which involve drinking three cups of coffee just before you enter the lecture hall.

Stay Hydrated

Dehydration can be a major cause of feeling sleepy, and the problem is worsened if you’re then sitting in a warm, slightly stuffy room. Drink enough fluids before your lecture and take a bottle of water with you—not only will the water help you stay alert, the act of picking up the bottle and taking another sip will help you to stay engaged and alert as to what’s being said in the lecture.

Eat A Balanced Breakfast

Make sure you fuel up with some essential vitamins and nutrients before you get to class. Try a porridge bowl with some yogurt and berries, some wholemeal toast topped with nut butter, or some scrambled eggs with spinach for a great, energizing start to the day.

Take Notes

You’ve bought that gorgeous notebook and fancy pen, now is the time to put them to use! By taking notes, you will help your brain to stay activated and focused on what your professor is saying, reducing the risk of you falling asleep. Taking notes can also help you to feel productive, and will almost certainly come in handy later, meaning you’ll get the most possible out of attending the lecture.

If you’re house sharing or renting next to fellow students, the chances are that every now and again (or perhaps several times a week) there will be noisy nights, with people listening to music, sitting up chatting, or deciding that 11:30pm is the perfect time to dry their hair. Even if you can generally handle these noises, if you’re about to head into exams period you might be stressing about getting enough sleep. Check out these tips on how to handle annoying noises at night.

White Noise

Some people find white noise incredibly soothing, and it can help to drown out any other sounds coming from your house or flat at night. There are several apps or playlists available which will fade out after a few hours, or simply press play on some continuous white noise and enjoy it for the rest of the night. Just remember, some people can find this type of noise annoying, so make sure your volume is at a sensible level!

Try Some Ear Plugs

If the noises are really getting to you, try some foam style ear plugs to blot out the noise. Gently roll each ear plug between your fingers before inserting into your ear. Do be aware that wearing these every night can lead to irritation inside your ear, and some people find them so uncomfortable they can’t keep them in the entire night.

Talk To Your Neighbors

If you’ve tried white noise and ear plugs and your sleep is still suffering, you’re going to have to face facts and try and talk to your housemates or neighbors. As ever with these kinds of conversations, don’t go in aggressively, simply explain factually what it is that’s keeping you awake at night and see if you can come to an agreement around noise levels after a certain time. If the noise-maker really isn’t budging, it may be time to seek external help, such as from the pastoral leads in your dorm or building.
